AFC Bargoed Red’z  2 South Wales Amateur Select X1  9

An entertaining game at Bargoed Park to celebrate the 50th anniversary of AFC Bargoed Red’z entry into the League resulted in a comfortable victory for the League side in front of a large crowd. However the first half was a very close affair with the home club twice leading through L Brewer and R Harding. The League’s first half goal came from Nick Davison. At this point Bargoed must have harboured hopes of upsetting their illustrious opponents as they went in for half time with a 2-1 lead. Their industry and support play caused some concern to the League defence.
A quick goal from Jeff White early in the second half settled the League team who controlled the game from then on. Further goals from Stuart Lindsay and Lewis Bryl gave them a 2 goal cushion. Plucky Bargoed never gave up but the speed, vision and fitness of the League side took its toll in the final 20 minutes with another 5 goals from Ben Thornton, Jeff White, Nick Davison, Dean Woods and an own goal provided the final score.
The League Team was represented by these 12 players – Matthew Davie, Nick Davison, Jeff White, Lewis Bryl and Gareth Powner (all Rhoose FC), Mark Richards and Gary Bridson (Treforest FC), Ben Thornton and Dean Woods ( Aber Valley), Stewart Lindsay and Rhys Gould (Llantwit Major), Gavin Williams (Pencoed Athletic).
The match was ably and sensibly refereed by Keith Redford.
The League congratulates AFC Bargoed Red’z on its 50 years with us and was pleased to see so many former players of the club at Bargoed Park. The League is also very pleased to have helped the club in its quest to raise money for the Dean Shorney Charity.
